automatic defibrillators available on their campuses

The name is all it takes to generate memories of 15-year-old Merritt Island native and Cocoa Beach soccer star Rafe Maccarone, who collapsed during a 2007 varsity practice and died on Dec. 1.Nearly five years after his death, “Maccarone” customized jerseys occasionally dot the stands at athletic events across the county. Soccer, yes, but the sport doesn’t matter. Football, basketball, wrestling. The season doesn’t matter. May, October, January.Today in Cocoa Beach, runners will gather to remember him with the 5K race that bears his name and raises funds for Our Saviour School.Merritt Island coach Scooty Carey, who coached Rafe in youth soccer and coached against him in high school games, often wears a tough exterior.
But on his sleeve Thursday night, he was wearing “R6, Never Forget,” a reference to Rafe and his custom men jerseys number.“A lot of people say these kinds of things, but not a day goes by that I don’t think about him,” Carey said. “There’s always something that happens that causes me to think about Rafe.”That makes it an everyday possibility. Everything the Mustangs team wears bears some memorial to Rafe, and they aren’t the only ones with his name and number in their wardrobe. After his death, the team did not play for 12 days.In the first game back for the customized Milwaukee Brewers jerseys , both they and every player for visiting Merritt Island wore a No. 6 jersey.
“He came from a wonderful family, first of all. He was a nice young man with integrity, determination and a will to win,” said Merritt Island assistant football coach Jimmy Black, who saw what everyone else saw as the young soccer player began to emerge as a leader at the varsity level. “He put it in the hole. He was a winner.”Maccarone, a forward, led the 2007 Cocoa Beach Minutemen to a 6-1-1 start with a team-leading seven goals and three assists when he collapsed on that December Friday due to a heart problem. His death is largely responsible for Brevard County high schools now having automatic defibrillators available on their campuses.

I can’t support them

Whether you love those dogs or hate them, the Phoenix Coyotes’ run deep into the Stanley Cup playoffs is igniting heated emotions in the NHL franchise’s previous home town.In Winnipeg, plenty of hockey fans remain bitter about the Jets’ departure for the Arizona city 16 years ago. Among them, Tim Gillis and Chris Nault have reacted to the Coyotes’ post-season success this spring by setting a replica of the team’s original custom kids jerseys on fire.“This is a chance to show my affection for the Phoenix Coyotes, and the bitterness that still lies deep in me from when they departed − when they were the Jets,” Gillis, 33, told the Winnipeg Sun while friend Chris Nault used a new Jets lighter to set the custom youth jerseys ablaze, creating a smoking stench.
“And this smell is just how I felt when the team departed for Phoenix.”Gillis added he has “no reason” to cheer on the Coyotes as they head into the NHL’s Western Conference final against the Los Angeles Kings, following their playoff series wins over the Chicago Blackhawks and Nashville Predators − even if they were once Winnipeg’s franchise for 17 big-league seasons.“No, I don’t want them to win,” he said. “I can’t support them. They crushed our souls when they left in ’96. You can’t support something that hurts you so bad.”Nault, 34, pointed to the smelly, blackened customized Washington Nationals jerseys on the ground to indicate his opinion.“There, that’s what I feel,” he said. “They left. They bailed.”Winnipeg, however, has at least a couple of staunch Coyotes fans. Chris Mackling supports the second edition of the Jets that returned to Manitoba via Atlanta last year, though his devotion to Winnipeg’s previous NHL team − the Coyotes − runs deeper. And he’s ecstatic about their new playoff success.“They’re part of me. So when they left, there was never even a consideration for me that they wouldn’t still be my team,” said Mackling, who has several Coyotes jerseys and has travelled to watch them play in many cities over the years − beginning with the team’s first regular season game in Phoenix in October 1996.
The 34-year-old’s support for the Coyotes, though, hasn’t been easy. He noted that Coyotes backers appear almost extinct in Winnipeg, especially now that the city is back in The Show. And that makes him an easy target.
“I’ve gotten ridiculed more than a Leafs fan. I don’t really know any Coyotes fans, and I never got any support for it,” Mackling said. “You shouldn’t be made fun of because you’re loyal, even if it’s to a fault.”Jay Murray is another of the few Coyotes backers in Winnipeg. He said his “hard-core” support has led him to attend about 20 of the team’s games in the past three seasons.“I couldn’t be more proud. They’ve exceeded everyone’s expectations. If they go to the final, I’ll definitely go to Phoenix for a game,” said Murray, 25. “The Jets are second, to me. Maybe one day, they’ll be first − but not right now.”

a long and successful road ahead

Less than six months after commemorating the opening of a Coca-Cola distribution facility in South Brunswick, representatives of Gov. Chris Christie’s administration visited the site again on May 2 to announce the revival of New customize jerseys Adopt-A-Highway program.New Jersey Department of Transportation Commissioner James Simpson kicked off the launch of the volunteer program, which provides opportunities for businesses and organizations to financially sponsor litter removal along the state’s highways. He described its revival as the newest component of the Christie administration’s Clean Up NJ initiative. “When [Christie] gave me this job, I realized how dirty the state had become,” Simpson said. “We’re serious about bringing the garden back in the Garden State.”NJDOT launched Clean Up NJ in 2010. The initiative includes specific maintenance efforts by NJDOT operations staff, an Urban Youth Corps program, and beautification tasks performed by state inmates under the supervision of the Department of Corrections.Simpson claimed that well-maintained highways convey a sense of pride and send a message to potential employers that New custom team jerseys is an ideal place to establish a business.
According to an NJDOT press release, a total of 7.5 million pounds of litter and debris was removed from New Jersey highways in fiscal year 2011. South Brunswick Mayor Frank Gambatese attended the event, along with Township Manager Bernie Hvozdovic, Councilman John O’Sullivan, Public Works Director Ray Olsen, Recycling Inspector Bill Epps and Recycling Coordinator Nancy Paquette. They expressed gratitude to Coca-Cola employees, who will adopt a one-mile segment of Route 130 near the distribution center. Volunteers will pick up litter along the northbound and southbound shoulders, but, for safety reasons, will leave the narrow median to NJDOT crews.“We are so proud of Coke, because this is what they do − get involved in the community,” Gambatese said.Mike Chidester, vice president of market unit field operations for Coca-Cola Refreshments, said the company was proud to be among the first supporters of this environmental initiative in New Jersey.“Over the years, we have learned that our sustainability efforts must have a direct connection to the communities that we serve and operate in order to drive lasting change,” he said. “We look forward to a long and successful road ahead for New customized Arizona Diamon dbacks jerseys ’s Adopt- A-Highway program.”
NJDOT partnered with the New Jersey Clean Communities Council (NJCCC) for administrative support. Chidester said the company supports NJCCC as it inspires an anti-litter culture. NJCCC Executive Director Sandra Huber and board President Patrick Ryan attended the event. Huber said she was excited to support the Adopt- A-Highway program because it benefits both the environment and the state’s residents.“The sight of volunteers working to clean up litter reinforces a primary message that we ought to put trash in its proper place and not litter,” Huber said.
